Is Your Business Ready for AI Agents? A 10-Point Readiness Checklist

TL;DR: Your business is ready for AI agents if you have repetitive work you can describe step by step, data that lives in tools an agent can connect to, someone who can review what the agent does, and a clear picture of your data-privacy constraints. Run through the 10 points below - most “no” answers are fixable, and a couple of them mean you should honestly wait.

Is your business ready for AI agents?

You’re ready for AI agents if five things are broadly true: you have repetitive work you can describe step by step, your data lives in tools an agent can connect to, someone on your team can own review and approval, you know your data-privacy constraints, and you can tolerate a few rounds of iteration.

None of that requires an AI strategy, a data team, or a big budget. These are questions about how your business runs today. Here’s the full checklist:

#QuestionYou’re ready if…
1Do you have repetitive work? The same tasks come up every week - bookkeeping, posting content, chasing invoices - and they follow a pattern.
2Can you describe the workflow? You could write the steps down for a new hire. If a person could follow your notes, an agent can too.
3Does your data live in connectable tools? It’s in software like QuickBooks, Shopify, Slack, or Google Workspace - not on paper or in someone’s head.
4Is there an owner? One person can review agent output and approve the actions that matter, especially early on.
5Do you know your privacy constraints? You can say which data is sensitive and whether it’s allowed to leave your control.
6Cloud or on-premises?You know - or want to find out - whether a managed cloud is fine or data must stay on your own hardware.
7Can you define “done correctly”?You can describe what a good outcome looks like, so results can be checked against something.
8Can you tolerate iteration? You expect the first version to be refined, not perfect - agents learn from results over time.
9Is your team on board? The people doing the work today would rather hand it off than protect it.
10Do you have a starting point? You can name one workflow to automate first, instead of trying to automate everything at once.

Score it honestly. Most boxes checked means you’re ready; the unchecked ones tell you exactly what to fix first.

Can an agent actually connect to your data?

This is the most common gap, and it covers points 1 through 3. Agents work by observing your data sources and acting on what they find - which only works if the data is reachable. Revenaite agents connect to 50+ tools, including Stripe, Plaid, HubSpot, Salesforce, Slack, Google Workspace, QuickBooks, Shopify, AWS, GCP, Snowflake, and SAP - plus the emails, spreadsheets, and social media you already use.

If your workflow lives in tools like these, the connection problem is already solved. If it lives on paper or entirely in one employee’s head, you’re not disqualified - but getting it into software is the first step, and it’s worth doing whether or not you ever deploy an agent.

Who reviews what the agent does?

Autonomous doesn’t mean unsupervised - that’s points 4 and 7. Our Smart Invoice Flow agent, for example, reads incoming invoices and checks them against your orders, but it prepares payment approvals for your review. And every action any agent takes is recorded in a tamper-proof audit trail you can review anytime.

That design only pays off if someone actually looks. Readiness here means naming one person who owns the workflow: they review output early on, approve the actions that matter, and tell us when something’s off. That’s also why point 7 exists - if nobody can say what “done correctly” looks like, nobody can review against it.

Is cloud vs. on-premises a readiness question?

Yes, but not the way people expect. You don’t need to have picked an infrastructure model - you need to know which of your data is sensitive and whether it can leave your control. From there, the fork is straightforward:

  • Managed cloud is acceptable: agents run on Google Cloud - isolated containers on GKE, managed through Vertex AI, powered by Gemini. This is the fastest way to start.
  • Data can’t leave your infrastructure for regulatory or contractual reasons: agents run fully on-premises, with Gemma 4 on Google Distributed Cloud or your own cloud and complete data isolation.

We wrote a full comparison of cloud vs. on-premises AI agents if you’re weighing the fork. For readiness purposes, knowing the constraint is enough.

When should you wait?

Not every business should deploy agents right now, and some shouldn’t at all. Wait - or skip agents entirely - if:

  • The work is genuinely one-off. Agents shine on repeating patterns. If every task is different, a capable person is still the better tool.
  • The volume is tiny. If a task barely takes any time in the first place, doing it by hand is the right answer.
  • Nobody can own review. An agent no one supervises is a liability, not a time-saver. Assign an owner first.
  • The workflow itself is in flux. If you’re mid-reorganization, stabilize the process first, then automate the stable version.
  • You need answers, not actions. If the job is answering repeat questions, a chatbot is simpler and cheaper - we cover that honestly in what a private AI agent is.

What if you checked most of the boxes?

Then the question shifts from “am I ready?” to “where do I start?” You don’t have to start big: plans are scoped to your workflows in a consultation rather than sold at a flat price, and the Starter plan covers a single agent category - one workflow, like bookkeeping or social media, with room to add categories as you grow.

Picking that first workflow is exactly what the consultation is for: a free 45-minute call where we walk through how your business works today, find the biggest time-savers across our seven agent categories, and show you how agents would handle them - no pressure, no commitment. Submit a request and we’ll reach out within 24 hours.

If you checked more boxes than you expected, a free consultation is a low-stakes way to confirm it.
